IOL Implants at Samsung Miracle
Intraocular Lens (IOL) Implantation at Samsung Miracle Eye Clinic is used to treat cataracts, as well as Presbyopia. After a thorough eye exam to determine the best implantable lens for your needs, we proceed with surgery. Using the world’s only intelligent ultrasound phacoemulsification device – the Centurion Gold – we first remove the eye’s natural lens, and then insert an implantable lens in the posterior chamber (behind the iris), replacing the natural lens, and restoring clear vision.

How is IOL Implants Surgery Done?

STEP 1
A one-on-one examination by an optometrist, followed by a secondary in-depth evaluation by the attending surgeon.

STEP 2
Confirmation of the patient’s individual lens prescription using the Miracle Formula.

STEP 3+4
First-stage monocular (single-eye) surgery performed. The following day, a postoperative check is performed, and then surgery is performed on the opposite eye.

STEP 5
Binocular (both-eye) vision is confirmed during a final check-up with the doctor.
Our Precision Technology for Cataract Surgery
World-Class Phacoemulsification Technology: Centurion Gold
This ultrasonic surgical device rapidly performs suction and removal of the lens during cataract surgery. It is equipped with the Active Sentry® function, the world’s first built-in Intraocular pressure sensor that automatically detects intraocular pressure and movement during surgery and continuously maintains appropriate intraocular pressure, maximizing safety, and minimizing post-operative pain.

Safety and Precision Guaranteed: LUMERA 700 + CALLISTO EYE
We provide error-free surgical results using the LUMERA 700 microscope, which provides excellent field of view and three-dimensional analysis, and the CALLISTO EYE, which provides the insertion angle and guidelines for intraocular lenses.
IOL Implants Treatment Timeline
Unlike conventional intraocular lens implantation surgeries that only perform surgery on one eye in a single day, Samsung Miracle has designed a system that allows surgery on both eyes on the same day, reducing the inconvenience of having to visit the hospital again, and increasing satisfaction with the surgery by reducing the burden of the surgery, shortening the surgery time, and speeding up vision recovery.

Miracle Formula for Cataract Treatment
While choosing the perfect lens for your individual needs is crucial, even more crucial is the lens prescription that creates a refractive index of zero. Current prescription calculation programs used by many ophthalmologists are tailored to Western standards and are not optimized for also treating Asian patients.
To address this, Samsung Miracle has developed the ‘Miracle Formula’, Korea’s first prescription calculation program suitable for all races, building on existing IOL prescription formulas, utilizing data from over 3,000 surgeries performed in Korea. Our ‘Miracle Formula’ means that we can accurately treat patients of all races, and ensure better tailored and more precise prescribing for the best results, every time.

Understanding Cataracts and Presbyopia
Have you noticed a difference in your vision? Cataracts and Presbyopia are both conditions that affect most people as we age. Some people may begin seeing symptoms of Presbyopia as early as in their 40s, whereas people with cataracts will tend to notice symptoms around the age of 60-65.

Cataract
Light entering the eye is refracted through the lens, a transparent refracting organ, and forms an image on the retina. A disease in which the lens becomes cloudy and light cannot pass through properly is called a cataract.

Presbyopia (Far-sightedness)
Presbyopia is a condition in which the muscles around the lens that adjust focus for near and far distances lose elasticity, making it difficult to see up close.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is IOL cataract surgery?
IOL cataract surgery is a treatment that removes a cataract and replaces the eye’s natural lens with an intraocular lens (IOL). Along with clearing the cataract, it can also help correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, and it can be used to address presbyopia.
How do I know if I might need an IOL implant?
It may be a good option if you notice symptoms like foggy or hazy vision (as if looking through mist), double or triple vision even with one eye, sensitivity to light or halos around bright lights, blurry near vision with clearer distance vision, difficulty switching focus between near and far, or needing to hold reading material about 35cm or more away to see clearly.
What are cataracts and presbyopia, and when do they usually show up?
A cataract is when the eye’s lens becomes cloudy so light can’t pass through properly. Presbyopia happens when the muscles around the lens that adjust focus lose elasticity, making it difficult to see up close. Some people start noticing presbyopia symptoms as early as their 40s, while cataract symptoms are often noticed around ages 60–65.
How long does the treatment take, and what is recovery like?
The procedure involves a minimum incision size of 3mm and a treatment duration of about 3–5 hours. Recovery takes 1 day, with caution advised for 1 week.
Can both eyes be treated in one day, and how many visits are needed?
Our streamlined system can allow surgery on both eyes on the same day, helping reduce inconvenience and speed up vision recovery. The treatment timeline includes a post-operative follow-up and states a minimum of 2 visits, requiring 2 days.
What are the main steps of the IOL implant process?
The process involves: (1) a one-on-one exam by an optometrist plus an in-depth evaluation by the attending surgeon, (2) confirmation of the individual lens prescription using the Miracle Formula, (3) first-stage single-eye surgery, (4) a postoperative check the next day followed by surgery on the opposite eye, and (5) a final check-up to confirm binocular (both-eye) vision.
What technology is used during cataract removal and IOL implantation?
This procedure includes using lasers for incisions and cataract removal, as well as the Centurion Gold phacoemulsification device for suction and lens removal. For safety and precision, we use the LUMERA 700 microscope and the CALLISTO EYE system to provide intraocular lens insertion angle and guidelines, as well as an Active Sentry® built-in intraocular pressure sensor that detects pressure and movement and helps maintain appropriate intraocular pressure.
What is the “Miracle Formula,” and why is it used?
The Miracle Formula is a lens prescription calculation program designed by Samsung Miracle Eye to be suitable for all races, built on existing IOL prescription formulas and using data from over 3,000 surgeries performed in Korea. It’s a way to more accurately confirm an individual lens prescription and provide more tailored, precise prescribing for better results.
What’s the difference between monofocal and multifocal intraocular lenses?
A monofocal intraocular lens is focuses vision at only one point (near or far), so vision at unfocused distances does not improve, and you may need magnifying glasses after surgery; it’s suitable for people who don’t usually do a lot of close-up work. A multifocal intraocular lens focuses vision at near, far, and intermediate distances, improving vision at all distances, with no need to use magnifying glasses after surgery; it’s suitable for active lifestyles such as reading, working on a computer, or doing outdoor activities.
