Presbyopia vs. Cataracts: Easy Confusion

Presbyopia and cataracts have similar symptoms, so they are easy to confuse, and it is common for presbyopia and cataracts to occur at the same time.

Presbyopia is a condition in which the muscles around the lens that adjust focus for near and far distances lose elasticity, making it difficult to see up close .

Cataract

Light entering the eye is refracted through the lens, a transparent refracting organ, and forms an image on the retina. A disease in which the lens becomes cloudy and light cannot pass through properly is called a cataract.

Cataract Self-Diagnosis

  • Vision loss: Vision becomes hazy and cloudy, as if covered in fog. Because it progresses gradually and accompanied by a decline in visual acuity, it may not be recognized early.
  • Double vision: Even if you look with only one eye, objects appear double or triple.
  • Day blindness: Your eyes may feel sore in bright places, you may squint frequently when exposed to light, and you may have trouble seeing in dark places or indoors. Light may appear diffuse or dazzling, making it difficult to open your eyes.
